UV disinfection or ultraviolet disinfection is a method of treating drinking water by the use of ultraviolet radiation to inactivate micro-organisms.

UV units consisting of specialized low pressure mercury vapour lamps produce ultraviolet radiation and the lamps never come into contact with the water.
